Abstract	Konj se evolucijski razvio kao ţivotinja koja pase i najveći dio energije dobiva iz voluminoznih krmiva. S obzirom na moderan način korištenja konja, njihovo drţanje svelo se na boravak u zatvorenom i cjelodnevno mirovanje, uz dva do tri obroka sijena, i najčešće, dva obroka koncentrirane hrane. MeĎutim, probavni sustav konja nije prilagoĎen na takav reţim ţivota te se iz tog razloga javljaju ozbiljni problemi. Kolike, skupina simptoma kojima dominiraju izraziti bolovi u trbuhu, a koje konj na vrlo dramatičan način očituje,mogu biti posljedica čitavog niza promjena u probavnom sustavu. Većina kolika prolazi spontano ili uz minimalnu intervenciju, no neke zahtijevaju kirurške zahvate odnosno nerijetko završavaju uginućem ţivotinje. Liječenje kolika, dakle, moţe biti vrlo teško, skupo i na kraju bez rezultata. Stoga je potrebno, na temelju poznavanja anatomije i fiziologije probavnog sustava konja te prirodnog načina ţivota konja, staviti naglasak na prevenciju te uvjete ţivota i adekvatnom hranidbom maksimalno smanjiti mogućnost nastanka kolika.
Abstract (english)	During the evolution, the horse has developed as a grazing animal and the most of the energy it gets from the forage. Considering the modern way of using the horse management of the horse now consists of spending the most of the day indoor, having two or three concentrated meals, and two or three forage meals. However, the digestive system of the horse is not adjusted to such a regime and because of that serious problems may arise. Colic, a group of symptoms dominated by severe abdominal pain, may be the result of many serious conditions in the digestive system. Most of the colic episodes needs no or just a minimal veterinary intervention, but some of them end up with a surgery or a death of the animal. Treating colic could become very complicated, expensive, and with no positive result. Because of that and based on the knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system of horse and the natural lifestyle of horse, it is necessary to emphasize prevention and assure the best life conditions and adequate nutrition to reduce the risk of colic as much as possible.
