Aim: The aim of the study was to examine the changes of macular thickness measured by optical coherence tomography before and after ultrasound phacoemulsification and to determine the possible connection with intraoperative variables of phacoemulsification – cumulative dissipated energy ( CDE ) and estimated fluid used ( EFU). Study type: Prospective cohort study. Patients and methods: The study included 30 adults of both gender who successively underwent ultrasound phacoemulsification cataract surgery and who consented to the study. Exclusion criteria were previous eye surgery, diagnosis or anamnesis of uveitis or macular oedema, diabetes, non proliferative and proliferative diabetic retinopathy, earlier argon laser treatments within three months before surgery, chorioidal diseases, inability to perform an OCT. OCT macular thickness measurement and the best corrected visual accuitiy were performed on every patient a day before surgery, on7th and on 30th day after surgery. For each patient mean intraoperative variables were measured and recorded- CDE and estimated fluid used. Results: All patients had a significant increase in the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) after phacoemusification cataract surgery (median before surgery 0,25, and after 0,95). Phacoemulsification did not have significant impact on intraocular pressure (IOP), median pressure value was 16 mmHg on all controls. After 7th and 30th day a significant increase in macular thickness has been observed, median value 244,5 and 254. Mean CDE was 9,73 (interquartile range from 8,89 to 17,48), and EFU was 46 cm3 (interquartile range from 39 cccm to 57 cccm) which did not have significant influence on macular thickness changes. Conclusion: Significant improvement in the best corected visual acuity was observed after phacoemulsification. Study has shown that there was significant difference in macular thickness before and after the surgery. However, increase in macular thickness did not directly corelate with intraoperative phaco parameters like increase in CDE and estimated fluid used.
