Abstract

Aim of the study: To determine whether there are any disorders concerning nutritional – metabolic functional health pattern within persons suffering from depression. Subjects and methods: Available medical and nursing documentation from The Department of Psychiatry (demographic data on age, gender of the subjects, medical diagnosis) was used as a research instrument, in addition to the specific data for estimation of nutritional-metabolic functional health pattern according to M.Gordon and calculation of the body mass index (BMI). Results: It is confirmed that patients suffering from depression are more prone to gain weight, and consequently to increase their body mass index. This is concluded on the basis of their increased body mass index, which was, on average, 27.30 at the check-in and 27.80 at the discharge. According to the World Health Organization this indicates that a person is overweight. The weight gain is a result of a certain lifestyle (sedentary lifestyle, overeating, eating late at night, and all sorts of unhealthy diets), habits (consumption of fatty and caloric foods) and a number of factors such as female gender, married persons, partially satisfactory monthly income, older age, rural regions, marriage community, heart diseases, etc. which leads to an increased body mass index. Conclusion: In patients suffering from depression it is found that a disorder in the nutritional-metabolic pattern exists, which means the subjects are overweight, as proved by the increased average body mass index. Therefore, the role of nurses is very important when it comes to these patients. It is a complex task and requires a full-time care and education about the patient.
