Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between values of arterial blood pressure and oxidative stress in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients before and after eight weeks of prescribed therapy. Materials and methods: Study included 20 newly found hypertensive patients. Subjects were divided into two groups, according to the prescribed therapy. Group ACEI took ACE inhibitors and group CAB took calcium channel blockers. There were ten subjects in each group. Blood samples for determination of oxidative stress via TBARS and FRAP assays were collected before and after eight weeks of therapy. Results: Correlation between values of arterial blood pressure and oxidative stress levels was not found. There was a significant decrease of oxidative stress in ACEI group and there was not any significant decrease in CAB group. After eight weeks of antihypertensive therapy there was a significant decrease of arterial blood pressure in both groups. Conclusion: ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers are equally good antihypertensive therapy. Only ACE inhibitors lead to decrease of oxidative stress.
