Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine the frequency of hand washing among staff and the circumstances in which this measure is commonly carried out, to determine whether there were differences in the frequency of hand washing among staff and between departments and clinics with high and low risk of developing hospital infections , to determine the level of equipment, and if there are differences in equipment between the selected departments and clinics to assess the interrelationship between the equipment of the work environment of the selected departments and clinics of the Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek and the frequency of hand washing of their employees. Study design: Cross-sectional. Respondents and Methods: The study involved the health- and non-health workers of the Clinic of Anesthesiology, Reanimation and Intensive Care and the Clinic of Internal Medicine of the Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek including hemodialysis and hematology. The survey was conducted anonymously with aself-administered-questionnaire, and consisted of demographic questions and questions about the characteristics and involvement in contact with patients, about habits related to the implementation of hand hygiene and workplace equipment. Results: The study included data from 141 respondents from selected departments and clinics of the Clinical Hospital Centre in Osijek. It was found that the results were similar to the global trends in the hand hygiene compliance and that compliance is higher in the moments after contact with the patient than before the contact. There are differences between the health and non-health personnel, as well as between departments of high and low risk. Conclusion: The implementation of proper hand hygiene as one of the basic measures for the prevention of nosocomial infections is still not consistently carried out in selected departments and clinics of the Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek.
