Abstract
Djetinjstvo više nije razdoblje udobne sigurnosti obilježeno igrom, već djeca odrastaju u nesređenim obiteljskim prilikama s upitnim autoritetom roditelja i njihovom vidljivom nebrigom.

Parallel abstract (English)
This thesis is the result of the representation of the child in Croatian children’s literature. The aim of the thesis is to show the representation of children characters and their childhood in selected children literature novels developed in different periods and to see the difference between children’s childhood then and now. There are analyzed the following novels: Zlatni danci (1918.), Jagoda Truhelka, Juma (2007.), Đurđica Stuhlreiter and Ideš mi na živce (2011.), Sanja Pilić. In older literature the child is showed as a function whose obligation is to learn behavior patterns transferred by adults. Adult authority is unquestionable and children have to suffer the consequence for their behavior. Children who grew up in patriarchal family we could see gender division but we can also say that there is a happy childhood marked by child’s play and naivety. That you cannot say for the children portrayed in contemporary literature, those children due to the problems in their family miss out playing time and happy childhood. In those literature works there is a reversed situation where children become adults and they mature too early. Childhood is no longer the period of safety and children grow up in a chaotic family situation by questioning the authority of parents and their conspicuous lack of care.
