Abstract

Comorbidity between somatic diseases and mental illnesses in the last few decades has been a great challenge to the modern societies' health services because it leads to numerous and diversified negative outcomes, from prominent functional disabilities over poorer treatment outcomes to increased health care costs. Therefore, the aim of this research was to study comorbidity between mental and physical illness in citizens of Osijek-Baranja county which were hospitalized for the primary psychiatric diagnosis in the period from 2005 to 2012. Data were collected through psychiatric statistic forms filled by MD during the hospitalization of their patients. Overall, 6561 forms were collected. Results confirmed first hypothesis that the most common psychiatric diagnoses are depression, anxiety, abuse of addictive substances, schizophrenia and PTSD. Gender differences were found in the prevalence of specific psychiatric diagnoses, as well as statistically significant difference in the prevalence of psychiatric diagnoses according to calendar years for a period of 8 years, which partly confirmed the second hypothesis. Namely, a gender difference was determined, which is not consistent with placed hypothesis. The third hypothesis was confirmed, there is some comorbidity of mental disorders and somatic diseases.
