Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
The aim of this study was to explore relation between exposure to mass media, body dissatisfaction, disturbed eating habits and frequency of dieting behaviour in adolescents. Also, we wanted to explore predictors of dieting in adolescents. The study was conducted on a sample of 154 high school students (second and third grade). The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Scale - 3 (SATAQ – 3) was used as a measure of media exposure, Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) as a measure of body dissatisfaction and Adolescent Dieting Scale as a measure of disturbed eating habits. For the purpose of this study we design a short questionnaire to examine frequency of dieting behaviour and related behaviours. The results indicate that media exposure is significantly positively related to body dissatisfaction, while body dissatisfaction was significantly positively related to disturbed eating habits and frequency of dieting behaviour. Also, media exposure was significantly positively related to disturbed eating habits. Furthermore, the results of hierarchical regression analysis show that body dissatisfaction is a positive predictor of dieting, while body mass index and media pressure lose their predictive importance after including body dissatisfaction.
