Abstract

Leader and manager are well-known terms for most people. Some consider them to be the same person, while others claims that the difference is very obvious. Both of them are essential in every company, but as management indicates the function, leadership indicates the attitude of the individual and its impact on others. This work will explore the differences and similarities between leaders and managers. After the academical explain about who is a manager and who is a leader, and what their job description is, it will be explore what makes the difference between them as well as their similarities. Also, in this work the highlight is on the difference between the sexes in the process of leadership, and who is, according to the style of leadership more often a leader – women or men. Based on the research, we have analyzed management levels in the company and how the level makes influence on whether a person in a managerial position leader or manager. The chapter “Manager vs. Leader in practice” shows the results of a study conducted on managers in leading companies in Croatia. The study points to a large number of men in management positions and therefore the chapter “Women in the business world” analyzes what prevents women from reaching the very top of the company, whether it comes to prejudice of the environment or the deficiency of self-confidence.
