This paper analyzes the macroeconomic consequences of Croatia's accession to the euro area. It aims to analyze and describe the positive and negative economic effects of introducing the euro as the official currency. By joining the European Union in 2013, the Republic of Croatia undertook to replace the domestic currency with the single European currency, once it has met the necessary conditions. The conditions and criteria for introducing the single European currency are laid down in the Maastricht Treaty, and refer to price stability, public finances, exchange rates and long-term interest rates. These criteria are laid down to encourage the Member States to behave responsibly in order to achieve economic stability and thus prepare them for joining the Monetary Union. Numerous economic experts are considering the advantages and disadvantages of introducing the euro as the official currency. They are also analyzing whether the change should be introduced promptly or whether Croatia's accession to the euro area should be prolonged. The most significant advantage of this process would be the elimination of currency risk, while the most significant disadvantages would be price increase (inflation) and loss of monetary sovereignty. Economic experts argue that the lasting benefits of introducing the euro are more significant than the short-term costs. Croatia has started the euro adoption process, and to a large extent it meets the conditions necessary for joining the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II) and the Economic and Monetary Union. This paper also analyzes the perceptions and expectations of Croatian citizens about the adoption of the euro, who are largely under the opinion that the euro would bring more negative effects and a reduced quality of life, and that Croatia is not ready for such an undertaking. As part of the research on this topic, a survey questionnaire entitled "Adoption of the Euro in the Republic of Croatia" was conducted.
