Fruit growing is a branch of agriculture which is important to every state and every individual in it. Fruit is cultivated by those who grow the fruit, take care of its protection and eventually sell it on the domestic or foreign market. lt is well known that agriculture is responsible for meeting the human need for food, and it is also known that fruits are full of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. What is less known is the fact that the Republic of Croatia continues to import fruit under a number of conditions that enable it to produce large quantities. In addition to the continental and coastal parts of the country, where the production of various fruits is possible due to the climate, Croatia still does not produce sufficient quantities. This paper deals with theoretical and empirical considerations of fruit growing. The theoretical part is based on the clarification of concepts related to agricultural production such as the concept of agriculture, agricultural production resources, and the classification of agricultural production according to the National Classification of Activities (NKD). The empirical part deals with the analysis of fruit growing in Croatia and organic production. It also analyzes and compares the market of the Republic of Croatia with that of the European Union, based on the most common types of fruit produced, the area of orchards in hectares, and the markets to which they market their products. The calculation analyzes the variable costs of apple production. The end o f the paper presents the results of a survey on potential consumers of fruit products by the author.
