Abstract

The main goal of this master thesis is to present the applicability of business intelligence in managing a building project to be successful and systematically prepared for various environmental threats, as well as for successful identification and use of opportunities that, by using contemporary information systems, already at an early stage can be detected as upcoming trends. The said thesis has been promoted by Drucker, who advocates entrepreneurial economy and explains how innovations arising from smart ideas are transforemed into an organised activity, and entrepreneurship from ingeniousness into systematic management and clearly oriented strategies (Drucker, 1985). Conducting (managing) a project in synergy with business intelligence follows this idea and wish for systematic management under new circumstances in view of the specific and special features of individual projects. New technological information systems for data and business information collection enable to keep, analyse, process, store and disseminate relevant information (intelligence) that constitute a basis for business reports that are needed in various business processes for making important business decisions. Business reports have to be relevant and delivered in a timely manner in order to be used in the process of making important decisions in business operations, and in the context of this dissertation – in making important decisions for successfully conducting and managing a project. Business intelligence comprises various activities, from initial planning, collecting, analysing and processing of data, distribution and dissemination of completed analyses and final conclusions, up to creating business reports containing relevant information (intelligence) for the end user. Timely identification and proper interpretation of the collected information at a given time and in a given area is an essential precondition for the use of the information by target groups or persons, and in the context of this dissertation – by project managers. The application of business intelligence can be realised in various business entities and in different functions in economy, from planning, management, sale, marketing, finances, assessment of own resources, personnel and other business entities (competition), etc. Project management is carried out according to certain stages, from the definition, concept development, designing, implementation stages up to the use and utilisation of the project in function. For each individual project stage relevant information and available statistical data are needed to realise a high-quality project in line with the set targets. In these individual segments business intelligence provides informational support and logistics that is required to make timely decisions, in order for all the stages and the overall project, that is, the investments to be ultimately cost effective, or to justify the objective and purpose for which the project was initiated. When searching, collecting and storing information related to project implementation proper information sources (primary, secondary) have to be identified, and data and information have to be analysed and filtered in order to become a relevant good-quality basis (intelligence) for decision making in the process of project creation and implementation. For a finally successful project, high-quality conducting (management) is required under joint support by and in synergy with business intelligence, and in the dissertation also the manner and procedure are shown how this is treated and presented.
