Banking is one of the fundamental and indispensable components of the financial system, both in the Republic of Croatia and in the world. After the last economic crisis, there is a growing population of people who understand the significance of banking and its magnitude effecting the world economy. In the recent period of human history, society has become sensitive to responsible and long-term sustainable demeanour. Despite the fact that the primary focus is on the conservation and responsible behaviour towards the environment, other forms of responsible behaviour such as social entrepreneurship are emerging and are encouraged. One form of social entrepreneurship is ethical and Islamic banking. These forms of banking are considered as social entrepreneurs because they share their ethical principles with other social enterprises. One of the most important characteristics of social entrepreneurs is that the primary goal is not to generate profits but to operate sustainably in the long term. Which does not mean that social entrepreneurs (and their companies) refuse to make a profit or that their profit is not a goal, rather that the profit is based on responsible and ethical behaviour. Ethical and Islamic banks are conscientious about the moral, ethics, and doing business strictly according to law and regulations (Islamic banks subject to the strict religious laws and regulations). Ethical banks are more prominent in Europe and the world, while Croatia is still waiting for first ethical bank to open.
