Abstract
Alge su fotosintetski, kozmopolitski organizmi koji nastanjuju gotovo sva staništa. Osim što su najveći proizvođači kisika, njihova jedinstvena svojstva omogućuju im široku primjenu u prehrambenoj i farmaceutskoj industriji. Izvrstan su izvor proteina, minerala, vlakana, ugljikohidrata i vitamina te se zbog svojih bioaktivnih sastojaka sve češće koriste kao funkcionalna hrana. Njihovo antioksidativno, antiviralno, antibakterijsko i antikancerogeno djelovanje ima veliki utjecaj na zdravlje kao što su uloga u prevenciji raka, kontroliranju težine i održavanju imunološkog sustava.U ovom radu opisane su najznačajnije vrste algi koje se koriste u prehrani te utjecaj njihovih funkcionalnih sastojaka na zdravlje čovjeka.

Algae are photosynthetic, cosmopolitan organisms that inhabit almost all habitat types. In addition to being the largest oxygen producers, their unique properties allow them to be widely applied in food and pharmaceutical industries. They are excellent source of proteines, minerals, fibers, carbohydrates and vitamins, and because of their bioactive compounds, they are being used as a functional food more often than before. Their antioxidant, antiviral antibacterial and anticancer activity has a major impact on human health, such as prevention of cancer, weight control and immune system maintenance. This paper describes the most important types of algae used for human nutrition and the impact of their functional ingredients on human health.
